Human rights violations round up
It is very telling and chilling when reading news about the Malaysian Police raid on the office of news broadcaster Al Jazeera and two local TV stations in KL. This raid was conducted over a documentary on undocumented migrants and their detention in Malaysian Immigration detention centres.
Malaysia police raid Al Jazeera’s office happened on 4th August 2020.
As far as international human rights NGO is concerned, this is how the police raid is considered, Quote:
“The authorities’ relentless pursuit of Al Jazeera seems to be driven by a desire to punish journalists who aired Malaysia’s dirty laundry rather than a good faith application of the law,” said Matthew Bugher, head of the Asia program of British-based rights group ARTICLE 19.
He said Malaysia should investigate the rights violations shown in the documentary instead of targeting the filmmakers.”
Intimidation and retaliation against whistleblowers
“Malaysian authorities also detained a Bangladeshi man interviewed in the documentary after revoking his work permit, and said they will deport him for criticizing the government over its handling of undocumented migrants.” There is this horrible retaliation against an honest and concerned Bangladeshi man for his fellow countrymen.
“Popular online news portal Malaysiakini and its editor face rare contempt proceedings from the attorney general over comments posted by readers against the judiciary.” An intimidation against those who dared to expose the truth.
“Police also questioned an activist about a social media post alleging mistreatment of refugees at immigration detention centers.” Another victim of police intimidation in the hope that no one would dare to speak the truth publicly against human rights violation committed by the immigration authorities.
“A journalist from the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post was also questioned earlier about her reporting on migrant arrests.” A scare tactics on this international journalist to prevent human rights violation to be exposed in the international news.
Chinese nationals human rights violation account
On 23rd June 2022, a news article “Chinese nationals recall unpalatable meals, ‘RM100 soap for phone calls’. ” was published. This news article details the corruption and inhumane treatment of five Chinese nationals inside Pekan Nenas Immigration detention centre. The public was again treated to an eye opener on the scale of corruption within this institution. It is no wonder in the case of the Al Jazeera, the police was used to cover up and shroud the corruption from public view through persecution of whistleblowers.

Another account of inhuman conditions – Singaporean
After this public airing of the the horrendous and inhumane condition of Malaysian Immigration authorities detention facilities, a Singaporean gave an interview on his unlawful and illegal detention at the same Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot.
What the Singaporean shared does corroborates with what the Chinese nationals shared as well as in greater details, with actual photos, sketch of the cell layout and court documentation.
This account has high credibility because the KL High Court had awarded him two declaratory order on two separate detention period as illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional. The news is reported here: Malaysian immigration must pay Singaporean man over illegal detention: High Court & Singaporean’s detention in Malaysia ruled unlawful by Malaysian High Court.
Two articles, ” ‘I would have died in that inhumane place’ – Singaporean’s ordeal” & “Five weeks in jail – Retired engineer vows to keep fighting for justice” were published on 26th & 27th July 2022.
